527 Committee Contributors
The Kerry Campaign is now engaged in an attempt to make the American people believe that the Swift Boat Veterans For Truth is a "front group" for the Bush Administration. John Kerry has decided to take this route in an attempt to discredit the Swift Boat Vets and the Bush Administration instead of answering the the questions about his service and his testimony to the Senate in 1971. The Swift Boat Veterans for Truth is a 527 Committee. 527 Committees are defined this way:
527 Group – A tax-exempt group organized under section 527 of the Internal Revenue Code to raise money for political activities including voter mobilization efforts, issue advocacy and the like. Currently, the FEC only requires a 527 group to file regular disclosure reports if it is a political party or political action committee (PAC) that engages in either activities expressly advocating the election or defeat of a federal candidate, or in electioneering communications. Otherwise, it must file either with the government of the state in which it is located or the Internal Revenue Service. Many 527s run by special interest groups raise unlimited "soft money," which they use for voter mobilization and certain types of issue advocacy, but not for efforts that expressly advocate the election or defeat of a federal candidate or amount to electioneering communications.
The committees are the supposedly non-affiliated groups that constitute the loophole in the McCain/Feingold Campaign Finance Reform Bill. Donors are allowed to dump unlimited amounts of cash into these groups, who then use the money to run campaign ads. The most well known of these groups is Moveon.org, a leftist group that became known for running internet ads that showed President Bush morphing into Adolph Hitler.
As these groups become more powerful in this election it is helpful to see which groups have the most money, who they run ads for and who there largest donors are. A list is provided here. Of the top 25 donors, 24 have donated to Democratic/Progressive groups who have, to this point, run approximately $60 million dollars in negative TV ads against the Bush Administration. MoveOn.org alone has spent just under $20 million. Lets compare those numbers to the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, the group John Kerry has now filed and FEC complaint against in an attempt to silence. So far they have raised $158,750 and have spent $60,403 on ads which means that MoveOn.org alone has spent approximately 300 times more money against the Bush Administration than the Swift Boat Veterans have spent on their ads against Kerry.
Funny, when these groups were spending $60 million on ads against the Bush Administration, Kerry never had any complaints. Now that a group of Veterans have spent $60,000 against him, Kerry wants them silenced.
John Kerry: A MAN of Character.
